Android Apps Coming to Windows
Microsoft is reportedly considering bringing Android applications to its mobile and PC operating systems.
According to a recent report by The Verge, Microsoft is seriously considering making Android applications available on its operating systems. Microsoft's app deficit, particularly on its mobile operating system though also on its PC operating system, has been noticed by many and has kept some consumers from venturing to Microsoft's mobile offerings. With the rise and fall of "Flappy Bird," it was hard not to notice that Microsoft was not in the mix. Microsoft has struggled to generate developer interest in its apps across phones, tablets, and PCs and sources familiar with Microsoft's plans say that the company may allow Android apps to circumvent this problem.
While adding Android apps to Windows devices is one option for Microsoft, there have been several other suggestions for the tech giant. Some say that Microsoft would be better off dumping its Windows Phone line altogether and making "forked" Android phones. More likely, Microsoft would turn to Intel's suggestion of a dual OS. Intel has been pushing its Dual OS concept to allow PC makers to create hardware that runs both Android and Windows. Another option is BlueStack's ARM processor which allows users to run Android apps inside Windows. Microsoft's internal motto in the 1990s may also be part of its decision to add Android functionality, whether this means just apps or more, to its devices: "embrace, extend, extinguish." By embracing what it knows already works, Microsoft could keep itself in the mobile race and perhaps drive some consumers from iOS and Android. Though it is unlikely that Microsoft could "extinguish" Android, the first two factors - embrace and extend - could be just the push Microsoft needs to finally be a serious competitor in the mobile market.

Windows Phone 8.1 Roll-out This Summer
Though Microsoft has yet to announce an official launch date for its next mobile operating system update, a published report out of China claims thatWindows Phone 8.1 will be sent out between July and August of 2014.
While the July-August window is said to be the final version of the mobile operating system for users, the developer version of Windows Phone 8.1 is expected in April. According to the Chinese report, only developers with an App Studio account will be able to access the Developer Preview of Windows Phone 8.1 in April. Earlier this month, the confidential, invite-only Windows Phone 8.1 SDK Developer Preview was launched and some leaks have made their way to the rumor mill. Some of these leaked features include: sharing secure WiFi Networks with contacts if they have WiFi Sense, social notifications in an action center, encrypted and signed email support, Swype-like functionality, Geofence monitoring support, "Cortana" personal assistant, support for "Universal Apps," and more.
Microsoft is expected to publically unveil its Windows Phone 8.1 OS at its Build developer conference in early April. Before this, the company is planning to internally unveil much about the operating system over the next few weeks. Microsoft is holding a confidential "meet the new Windows Phone" event for close partners in London on February 28th. This meeting is specifically targeted towards business customers and will most likely detail the previously promised enterprise "feature pack" update for Windows Phone. Windows Phone 8.1 is not expected to make an appearance at the Mobile World Congress later this month but Microsoft is expected to talk about how Windows is evolving.
